Google Turned The Lights Out

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Google has a tradition of doing zany things to their logo and Web site for holidays and other important events. Today Google greets us with a shockingly dark page and states “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn…”. Google provides a little more detail, going on to say this is “… a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour“.

10 Ways to Survive the Recession

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Many business owners and entrepreneurs like myself are probably feeling the harsh economy here in the US. Many businesses have been laying workers off, cutting costs at all costs, and seeking dreaded lines of credit just to weather the storm.

I’ve seen many business news clips, blogs and articles lately that offer advice on keeping your business alive during tough times. There is some good advice and some bad advice, and some advice that’s just a waste of time. I decided to try and boil down the top ten recession survival techniques in my book right now.

Photographs of Lightning

Friday, March 21st, 2008

I was digging around my computer looking for a particular media file needed for a project when I stumbled across these pics from last summer. There was a very intense and long-lasting heat lightning storm visible from my rooftop, so of course I grabbed my camera and tried to capture some of it. At the time I was using a pretty old Sony 1.2MP so the picture quality is far from superb. The coolness factor is pretty high though, and if for no better reason than not losing them I decided to post them here.

Starbucks is Evil

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

I like coffee. In fact, I really like coffee. I drink coffee when I wake up, I drink it all day, and I even drink it before bed. Triple grande nVidia mocha latte

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Wow, I’m slick. Somehow I managed to dump an entire mocha latte *into* my computer… it went through the top fan which then sprayed it around my case like a sprinkler system. In the few moments I was frozen in shock, a small puddle was forming on the video card and my monitor displayed what appeared to be a digital aneurysm. By some crazy stroke of luck, everything still works perfectly after shutting down and washing my video card with tap water.

Zend Optimizer & EasyApache3 w/ PHP 5 & Apache 2

Friday, March 7th, 2008

After upgrading to PHP 5.2.5 and Apache 2.6.9 using the new easyapache3 scripts (WHM > Software > Apache Update) I was still left without Zend Optimizer. WHM and easyapache3 installed Zend Optimizer (located in /usr/local/Zend/lib/Optimizer-3.3.0/) but after some mucking about I made the mistake of running /scripts/installzendopt - previously used to install Zend Optimizer with a step-by-step installer.
