Fury-Tech Forums Lives Again

Posted on April 26th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

It has been quite a while since I was forced to shut down Fury-Tech Forums due to SPAM and lack of moderation. Many know Fury-Tech as a mix of heated debates over hardware and even more heated debates over politics and religion. Often leading to personal injury or harm or death or suffocation. (The previous statement is untrue in most countries). But needless to say, many victims fell to the wrath that is Fury-Tech.

Which is why it brings me great joy to announce once again that Fury-Tech Forums is back in with a much needed upgrade. Aesthetically speaking we have a little more to do. But the software itself is a major improvement over the SPAM honeypot that was phpBB. So get your arse to the new tech forums and tell me what you think.

vBulletin CSRF (vBulletin cross-site request forgery)

Posted on April 24th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

More fun in the Webmaster world of updates. Jelsoft today announced vBulletin 3.6.10, including various backported bugfixes from 3.7.0 but primarily to fix a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) in vBulletin 3.6.9.

cPanel VPS Optimized: Great taste, less memory

Posted on April 5th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

I just read about the new version of Cpanel / WHM that is supposed to use much less memory on Virtual Private Servers (VPS). Aside from the obvious benefit of freeing up resources and improving performance and capacity, cPanel also points out the benefits of being more eco-friendly than standard cPanel releases. I’m not sure how efficiently cPanel VPS Optimized translates into less energy consumption, but I’ll just take their word for it. This is exciting news for me, because I run many domains hosted on multiple VPS with cPanel/WHM.

Google Turned The Lights Out

Posted on March 29th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

Google has a tradition of doing zany things to their logo and Web site for holidays and other important events. Today Google greets us with a shockingly dark page and states “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn…”. Google provides a little more detail, going on to say this is “… a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour“.

Many business owners and entrepreneurs like myself are probably feeling the harsh economy here in the US. Many businesses have been laying workers off, cutting costs at all costs, and seeking dreaded lines of credit just to weather the storm.

Photographs of Lightning

Posted on March 21st, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

I was digging around my computer looking for a particular media file needed for a project when I stumbled across these pics from last summer. There was a very intense and long-lasting heat lightning storm visible from my rooftop, so of course I grabbed my camera and tried to capture some of it. At the time I was using a pretty old Sony 1.2MP so the picture quality is far from superb. The coolness factor is pretty high though, and if for no better reason than not losing them I decided to post them here.

Starbucks is Evil

Posted on March 13th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

I like coffee. In fact, I really like coffee. I drink coffee when I wake up, I drink it all day, and I even drink it before bed. Part of this mad addiction can be attributed to the fact that I don’t like going to sleep. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that I love sleep, but between a business and a baby it’s more myth than reality. So I drink coffee, and lots of it.

It was just announced that the Horde webmail application has been updated to version 3.1.7 to address the arbitrary file inclusion vulnerability found recently. cPanel has also performed upgrades in the PHP application security model for Horde, PHPMyAdmin, and PHPPGAdmin. Triple grande nVidia mocha latte

Posted on March 8th, 2008 by Gabriel Harper

Wow, I’m slick. Somehow I managed to dump an entire mocha latte *into* my computer… it went through the top fan which then sprayed it around my case like a sprinkler system. In the few moments I was frozen in shock, a small puddle was forming on the video card and my monitor displayed what appeared to be a digital aneurysm. By some crazy stroke of luck, everything still works perfectly after shutting down and washing my video card with tap water.
