PageRank Means Nothing (See For Yourself…)

Posted on April 16th, 2009 by Gabriel Harper

I just compared Google referrals to PageRank on 37 different Websites, and here are the results. The numbers are pretty amazing. If PageRank does mean anything, it certainly doesn’t mean good search performance…

Since I’ve been working like crazy on new code for my SEO scripts and upcoming phpLinkBid release, it wasn’t that tough to get these statistics together. A couple notes on the data:

  1. Google search referrals taken directly from server logs
  2. Sites are a random selection from my network, no special picks
  3. All sites at least six months old

As you can see below, there is basically no relationship between Google Referrals and PageRank… whatsoever. Hits & visitors were kept in there for some extra perspective. If you think I could improve on these stats, let me know.

In fact, from where I stand PageRank is now just a gimmick, instead of a somewhat useful gimmick. I’m sticking to my previous theory that PageRank is now the world’s most popular random number generator. :)

A link or blog to this thread from your own site would help spread this info (and I never ask for links). Either way, I would love to hear your thoughts/feedback…
